वनस्पतिजन्य तेल केवळ आपल्या आहारातच नव्हे तर साबण, सौंदर्यप्रसाधने, औषधे, तैलरंग, वंगण आणि इतरही अनेक औद्योगिक उत्पादनांमध्ये वापरले जाते. यात सर्वात जास्त तेल लागते ते आहारासाठी. एकेकाळी स्थानिक तेली स्थानिक तेलबियांमधून खाद्यतेल काढून ते ग्राहकांच्या मागणीनुसार स्थानिक पातळीवरच विकत असत. पण वाढती लोकसंख्या, गिऱ्हाइकांची वाढती सुबत्ता आणि वाढती निर्यात अशा विविध कारणांमुळे तेल आणि तेलापासून बनणारे पदार्थ पुढे मोठ्या प्रमाणात खपू लागले. त्यामुळे ते मोठ्या कारखान्यांमध्ये निर्माण होऊ लागले.

But due to various reasons such as increasing population, increasing affluence of consumers and increasing exports, oil and oil products started to be consumed in large quantities. So they began to be produced in large factories.
